The board of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of The American Orff Schulwerk Association stands in solidarity with our Black colleagues, students, friends, and community members. We stand with AOSA’s Statement Denouncing Violence Against Black People as well as the AOSA Diversity Statement. We agree that the Mission, Core Values and Diversity and Inclusion Statement must not only be words on a page but central to our everyday actions as both a National and Local organization.
We believe that Black Lives Matter. We grieve the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor, and countless more whose lives have been lost to the systemic racism, police brutality, and unjust violence inflicted on Black communities in America. We commit to listening to and honoring the voices of those who have been marginalized, and to reflect on our teaching and learning practices for ourselves, our students, and our communities.
In accordance with NNJOSA’s Mission Statement, we will “provide a forum for the continued growth and understanding of Orff Schulwerk that reflects the diversity in contemporary American society,” and hope that you will join us in unity. In conjunction with local AOSA Chapters, including resources shared by NYCCAOSA, we will provide professional development, literature, websites, and information on organizations that reflect diversity, equity, and anti-racist teaching practices.
