3/16 - LIBAN GÓMEZ: "CULTURAL CONNECTIONS IN THE MUSIC CLASSROOM"

Join us on the campus of William Paterson University for a workshop with Liban Gómez! One of the many ways to learn about students’ culture is though music. Music always brings people together. Participants will explore popular music from Latin America, in particular from the Dominican Republic, as we make cultural connections through movement, songs, and stories. We will be using children's literature as a vehicle to learn, explore, and promote/bring awareness in the music classroom in a playful manner: (composing, improvise, etc), that touch upon different themes: respect, individuality, diversity, equity, and more.

 Liban O. Gómez ☺ was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and has been teaching for 15 years at The School of Higher Expectations P.S. 66 in the Bronx, New York City. Liban previously taught grades 2 and 5 working particularly with the English Language Learners. He has been teaching General Music. At The City College of New York, he received his Bachelors’ Degrees in Childhood Education & Italian Literature and Language, followed by a Master’s in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL). He is certified in Orff-Schulwerk. He is the past president of the New York City Chapter of American Orff-Schulwerk Association. He is on the Board of Directors at ACEMM (American Center for Elemental Music and Movement). Liban frequently and actively attended numerous workshops offered in person or virtually. Liban is a polyglot and has traveled around the world to learn and explore other cultures. He loves and enjoys teaching, movement, sports, traveling, and photography.

10/21 - ASHLEY BROWN WOODSIDE: "CONFIDENCE & CLARITY IN ELEMENTAL MOVEMENT"

Join us on the campus of William Paterson University for a workshop with Ashley Brown Woodside! Effective teachers of Orff-Schulwerk use clear modeling and intentional process to isolate and manipulate musical concepts, but many lack the confidence to approach the movement elements in the same way. Experience the comfort and joy of a well-structured elemental movement unit, then workshop your own ideas and bring an original movement unit back to your students.

Ashley Brown Woodside is dedicated to exploring the interplay of creative dance and music education. She is an accomplished dancer and saxophone player with a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Syracuse University and a Master’s in Liberal Studies from Manhattanville College. She completed her Orff Schulwerk Levels at the San Francisco International Orff Course. Ashley has been an approved Teacher Educator in Movement Levels I - III, instructing at summer Orff levels courses since 2013. Her articles on elemental movement have been published in The Orff Echo. In addition to presenting workshops to school systems and chapters nationally and abroad, Ashley leads a Montessori Lower Elementary general education class, teaches PreK-6th grade children Music & Movement, and provides private woodwind instruction at The Tidewater School in Maryland.


9/9 - MANJU DURAIRAJ: "MAKING RESPONSIVE TEACHING VISIBLE IN ORFF SCHULWERK

Join us on the campus of William Paterson University for a workshop with Manju Durairaj! The responsive Orff Schulwerk model accentuates the efficacy of the Schulwerk as a hands-on approach, that focuses on the joy of elemental music making, integrates strategies for collaborative learning, respectful communication, feedback structures and culturally relevant teaching with purposeful choice of music, dance, song, chant, stories and poetry. This workshop examines responsive teaching, discusses the distinction between culturally responsive teaching and multiculturalism, includes multicultural dances, diverse children’s literature, pieces from the volumes and supplements and discusses incorporating assessments for and of learning.
WHEN: Saturday, September 9th from 9:00am-1:00pm. There will be a raffle with items provided by West Music - don't miss it!

Manju Durairaj was born and raised in India. She studied in Pune, India. She was involved in graduate research projects on comparative pedagogical practices of Indian (Carnatic) and Western Music at Middlesex University, London, UK. She graduated with her second master’s degree and K-12 certification from VanderCook College of Music, Chicago.
 
Manju is the Lower School Music Teacher at the Latin School of Chicago. She is president ILMEA elementary general music division, vice president-elect DEIA of AOSA, past president of the Greater Chicago Orff Chapter and is a certified Orff Schulwerk Levels Teacher Instructor. She is a certified Arts Integration specialist.  She is an adjunct professor at VanderCook College of Music, Chicago where she teaches curriculum design and elementary methods graduate and undergraduate courses. Her continuing teaching education courses, on campus and online, include Culturally Responsive Music Education, Technology, Arts Integration, Curriculum Development, Responsive Classroom, and Redesigning Teaching and Learning for 21st Century. She is a doctoral student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champiagn.
 
She is a frequent clinician at various state, national, and international conferences. She has been published in the Orff Echo, Reverberations, Illinois Music Educators Journal, General Music Today, and the Journal of the Council for Research in Music Education. Her publications with Hal Leonard include InterAct with Music Assessment Levels 1 and 2, InterAct Levels 1&2 Student Activities for Devices and Print, Technology in Today’s Music Classroom and Dancing Around the World with Music Express Magazine.

Tyrone "Dancing Wolf" Ellis is a Wolf Clan member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation of New Jersey. He practices many cultural arts, such as rattle making, drum making, singing & drumming, regalia making, and beadwork. He was a recipient of the New Jersey Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant, working under the tribe’s Chief to learn the creation of both Pow-Wow Drums and Water Drums and gained a residency from the Wheaton Arts to teach the younger generation of tribal youth. Tyrone has learned from numerous respected elders and knowledge holders amongst the tribe, including well known people such as Chief Mark “Quiet Hawk” Gould, Co- Chief Lewis “Grey Squirrel” Sonny Pierce, late grandmother Lorraine “Rainbow Walker” Gregg, Urie Ridgeway, and Will Mosley Sr. As his tribe’s Annual Pow-Wow and Program Coordinator he demonstrates the bulk of these arts to the public to promote healthy relationships while reducing stereotypes and ignorance of Native American Culture. UPDATE: Unfortunately, Mr. Willis's flight was canceled and the airline was unable to accommodate him on a new flight that would get him to the workshop on time. Therefore, the workshop will be HELD VIRTUALLY via the Zoom link sent out to registrants. The workshop will now take place from 10:00am-1:00pm. For WPU students there will be a post-workshop discussion from 1:00pm-2:00pm to satisfy the four hour requirement.

Franklin Willis is a three-time CMA Foundation Music Teacher of Excellence and with more than a decade of experience in the classroom, Franklin Willis is a trailblazer and catalyst for change in the music education space, as well as a rising leader within the music industry at large. He is the Community Impact Director at the CMA Foundation, which paves the way for students to experience equitable access opportunities in the music industry beyond the classroom. Willis is a children’s book author and graduate of the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Music in 2009. In 2012, he earned the Master of Education Degree in Nonprofit Leadership from Belmont University. Most recently Willis completed the Education Specialist Degree with an emphasis in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University.
